A pregnant jenny gave birth before officials finally trailered the animals to a wild burro refuge. The foal, knock-kneed and with eyelashes like a plush toy, displayed none of the distrust for humans expressed by his elders, gladly eating from Trevizo’s hand while the mother stood aside. But a few steps too close from me and my camera, and the foal would shy, causing his mother to charge.

Long legged and skittish, all the animals displayed the distinct, dark brown shoulder yoke common to burros, along with an indifference to our care beyond feeding time, adopting a curious gaze only when looked directly in the eye. The horses liked to gather behind the corral’s rock wall, straining their necks to scrutinize the animals, maybe familiar to them in some ways but not quite the same.
